Frequently Asked Questions

What is your focus/strength?

I would have to say that my creativity and genuine love of kids has enabled me to be a successful clinician.  I am told that kids consider me their favourite activity; and I am able to engage the 'littles' as well as the hard to motivate ones.

What are the rates of your services?

Speech Language Pathology services are not covered by OHIP, but are generally offered through extended health care plans. The rate for service is determined by the standards outlined by the Speech Language and Audiology Canada Association. Please call to inquire.

I've tried speech therapy before and it didn't work. Why are you different?

I am known as the ‘hands-on’ game girl! I love to create on the spot, play with my extensive variety toys, and engage through personal interactions.  With a theatre background, I am able to motivate,  capture the attention of,  and respond to everyone's unique needs, interests of the day, and ever -changing moods.

Are your services in-person or online?

Both! While it was the COVD pandemic that required me to adapt my practice to the virtual space, after endless hours researching techniques and learning from more experienced teletherapists,  I have now mastered the art of online therapy! Whether you are coming to me in-person or over the computer,  expect the use of a mix of online and in-real-life games and tools to maximize your child's outcomes (and fun!).

How old should my child be before starting speech therapy?

I am able to evaluate children's speech and language development as early as one year. Younger kids are generally evaluated through play, following informal assessment tool guidelines.  Through observation and parent input, we can determine if there are any precursors  to language development that are being missed; and if any additional referrals should be arranged.

Do I need a referral from a physician?

No, a referral is not necessary for booking an assessment or therapy session.  However, some insurance companies do require a doctor's referral note in order to cover claims.

My doctor/dentist said I could benefit from a tongue release. What does that mean?

Tongue/lip tie releases may be recommended for several reasons. The most common reason is to provide relief from breastfeeding difficulty. In older children. releases might be warranted in order to improve tongue mobility and a proper 'resting' position, which impacts speech production, swallowing, and proper nose breathing.

Is your office wheelchair/mobility aid accessible?

No,  unfortunately my office is not wheelchair accessible. However, I am happy to discuss with you the merits of virtual therapy and the possibility of travelling to you for in-person sessions.

How much improvement can I expect from Accent Modification Therapy?

While therapy is not magic, assistance from a trained SLP has been shown to effectively modulate a person's accent. Based on research with thousands of clients who enrolled in a Compton Accent Modification course, anyone who practices diligently (and has non-disordered speech and hearing) can reasonably expect to improve by at least 50%.
